Modern Foreign languages

Learning a foreign language is a liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures. At Brookfield Primary Academy, we aim to provide a high-quality language programme that fosters children’s curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world. Our curriculum enables children to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. We provide opportunities for children to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read in the original language. Our teaching of language aims to provide the foundation for learning further languages, in order to equip our children to study and work in other countries.

At Brookfield, we have chosen to teach Spanish as this is the foreign language they are first exposed to at neighbouring high schools to the children in Key Stage 2. To facilitate the teaching and learning of Spanish, we follow the Lingotot scheme of work, which is delivered by specialist teachers and supported by school staff each week. We use a variety of techniques to encourage the children to engage actively in Spanish lessons. We use a multi-sensory and kinaesthetic approach to teaching as we believe that this serves to reinforce memory and aim to ensure lessons are entertaining and enjoyable, as we realise that this approach serves to develop a positive attitude in the children to the learning of modern foreign languages. Lessons are carefully adapted to ensure the needs of all pupils are met; We build all children’s confidence through constant praise for any contribution they make in the foreign language, however tentative.
